China
As part of the BRIC countries, we can't ignore China as travelers destination of course! The country with the most inhabitans (1,3 billion) is huge and impressive.
From the big cities like Beijing and Shanghai to smaller villages in the countryside like Yangshuo, it's really amazing.
It depends on what you want to do and what you want to see. But if you just want the highlights of China, prepare for at least a two week trip. And even that won't be enough to see everything.
Ok, let's talk about the basics then. Arrive in Beijing like all other tourists and visit the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square and pay a visit to the Great Wall.
After a day or three, take the nighttrain (or a plane) to Xi'an to see the amazing statues of the Terracotta Warriors. Be advised that the 'Terracotta Park' nowadays is more like Disney World. The Chinese love to build shops around their historical places.
So, you've been on the road for a few days now and have seen two big, crowded cities. Now it's time for some laidback time and chill mode. Get yourself to Yangshuo, it's basically in the middle of nowhere. And although discovered by mass-tourism, still an idyllic town.
You're relaxed now, so it's time to go back to the big cities. Go to Shanghai and see with your own eyes, how China tries to combine communism with capitalism.
In the Shanghai area there are several big cities to visit, just Google it and you'll find in a 200km circle the cities of Nanjing, Wuxi, Hangzhou. All linked to Shanghai by high-speed trains by the way...
Now we are going to relax again and enjoy the rest and peace of the island of Hainan. After chilling on the tropical beaches, get some food from the fish market in the different towns. We've spent a few days in Sanya and the fresh fish market there is really amazing.
To complete the China highlights trip, take the plane to Hong Kong and discover the British/Chinese melt in this city-state.
